Yoga & Cross Country Skiing Adventure

January 24, 2010

Introducing Valley Yoga’s monthly outdoor yoga excursions called Yoga Hikes with Tracy. This January we’ll kick (and glide) it off with cross-country skiing at Maple Corner Farm in Granville, MA.

Cross-country skiing is one of the best total body non-impact aerobic exercises and yoga is a perfect way to both prepare the body for skiing and wind down after a day on the trails. In this program, you will learn yoga postures to develop balance and skillful weight transfer, along with meditation for calm and focus.

In this one day workshop Tracy will start off the day with her Yoga for Sports Conditioning class at 8:00 am with a yoga for skiing sequence. At 9:30 we’ll carpool to Maple Corner farm. We’ll have time to get ready in the lodge and then Tracy will lead a group warm-up and then a beginner’s ski clinic. Then skiers will ski at their own pace on trails suited to their ability. We’ll eat a bag lunch at the lodge (brought by participants). Passes are good for the day, when we reach consensus on when to leave, we’ll return to Valley Yoga.

Upon return Tracy will lead a restorative yoga class to help your muscles stretch and relax from the days activity. You’ll return home feeling strong, refreshed and rejuvenated by the beauty of winter in Western Massachusetts.

WTG will present “An Evening of One Acts” to be held January 22, 23, 29, and 30 at 7:30 pm at the Westfield Woman’s Club, 28 Court Street, Westfield. The evening will consist of three one-act plays:

Relative Strangers by Sheri Wilner
A young airline passenger decides that the woman seated next to her might be the mother she never had. She finds an ally in a wacky stewardess who, unlike the reluctant mother figure, believes these two passengers are a match made in heaven.

Untaken by Kathleen Palmer
Everyday we make decisions and choices that affect our lives in ways that we will never know, because we rarely get to see what would happen if we made the other choice. In this one-act drama, follow the stories of several people who are given the rare opportunity to see how their lives would change if they took another path.

Just Desserts by Pat Cook
Where there’s a will, there’s a relative. This was never truer than in the case of the late Desmond Clairborn. And greed was never better represented than in the relatives of the deceased. This farce has more twists than a pretzel, and half the fun is watching who gets what and the other half is watching them get it.

Tickets will be available at the door. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. For more information, call 413-572-6838.

Therapeutic Yoga for Beginners

January 13, 2010 6:00 pmtoFebruary 17, 2010 6:00 pm

Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

Therapeutic Yoga for Beginners is for anyone just starting out with yoga or for those who have ongoing muscular pain or tension requiring special attention. It’s also appropriate for those who like a gentle to moderate class. The class is taught by instructors versed in Structural Yoga, which is a style of yoga focused on adapting yoga to an individual’s body and specific needs. The theme of the class often focuses around strengthening the back, and releasing tension in the neck and shoulders.

This is a six week class series taught by two instructors to provide more individual student attention during class. Karla Geoffroy is a co-owner of Valley Yoga and a certified structural yoga therapist specializing in back care. Roger Lagasse is a registered yoga teacher with a strong background in structural yoga therapy.

Making Peace With Body Image: A Women’s Wellness Workshop

January 9, 2010
2:00 pmto4:00 pm

About the workshop:
Every day, women are bombarded by the command to be thin, lose weight, and get a flat belly fast.  Images of severely malnourished models and actresses penetrate our gaze whenever we step into the grid.  When coupled with stress and lack of awareness, these words and images can lead us down a self-destructive path that can erode self-esteem and lead to psychological and physical harm.  In this supportive, affirming workshop led by two yoga teachers with varied backgrounds, women will get the chance to evaluate the cultural ‘norms’ that keep us on the weight-obsession treadmill, formulate pro-active plans to bring peace into our self-image, and discuss our stories to discover common ground.

This workshop is designed for any woman who:
Struggles with her weight, has ever felt “too fat”, diets when not medically necessary, judges her body parts as flawed, or has ever felt less than worthy compared to others based on her weight.
